Australian CV format
Australian employers use 'CV' and 'résumé' interchangeably. Australian CVs are often a little longer than UK ones and commonly list referees at the end.
The essentials
- Two to three A4 pages for experienced candidates
- Australian spelling (similar to British: 'organise', 'colour')
- A short career summary at the top
- Work rights or visa status, if relevant
- Two referees with contact details at the end — always ask them first
Selection criteria
Public sector and some larger employers ask you to address 'key selection criteria' in a separate statement, much like an NHS supporting statement. Use the STAR method for each one.
Official advice
The Australian Government's Your Career site has guidance on applying for jobs.
Set your country to Australia in the builder to add a Referees section and use Australian conventions.
FAQs
Should I include a photo on an Australian CV?
No, it's not expected for most jobs.
Do I need to list my visa status?
If you're not an Australian citizen or permanent resident, stating your work rights briefly helps employers. Check the Department of Home Affairs for your visa conditions.
