Tips for a cashier CV
- Use this example when the advert is mainly about tills, checkouts or a kiosk. If it also mentions stock, deliveries and shop-floor work, the Retail Assistant CV example is a closer fit.
- Accuracy matters most. If your till balances regularly, say so, but only with numbers you can explain at interview.
- Name the payment types and systems you've used, such as card terminals, self-checkouts, the kiosk, lottery or parcel collections.
- Show you can stay calm: busy queues, refused sales and customers who are upset about a price or a refund.
- Put your availability near the top. Supermarkets often recruit for early mornings, evenings, weekends and December.
- No till experience yet? Use anything where you handled money or served people: a school tuck shop, a charity stall, a sports club bar or a summer job.
Cashier and checkout pay is usually hourly, sometimes with extra for nights, Sundays or bank holidays. Check the advert for the rate, and GOV.UK for the National Minimum Wage rates for your age. Salary checker (ONS data).

What supermarkets and shops look for in a cashier
Cashier adverts tend to ask for the same things, in slightly different words:
- Accuracy with money. Giving the right change, following the float and cash-up process, and a till that balances.
- Quick, friendly service. Keeping the queue moving without rushing customers.
- Following procedures. Age checks, refunds, vouchers, security and what to do with suspicious notes.
- Calm under pressure. Busy weekends, a self-checkout that keeps alerting, or a customer who's unhappy about a refused sale.
- Availability. Early mornings, late evenings, weekends and peak seasons.
Paste the advert into the free job ad keyword extractor to see which of these that employer mentions most, then make sure your CV has evidence for each one.
Cashier, retail assistant or sales assistant?
| Role | What the CV should lead with | Best example |
|---|---|---|
| Cashier or checkout operator | Tills, payments, cash-up, self-checkouts, age checks | This page |
| Retail assistant | Tills plus stock, deliveries and shop-floor service | Retail assistant CV |
| Sales assistant | Advising customers, product knowledge, add-ons, targets | Sales assistant CV |
| Supervisor or manager | Running shifts, cash office, rotas, training staff | Retail manager CV |
How to show accuracy on your CV
"Good with money" is a claim. A specific line is evidence:
- "Balanced my till at the end of every shift for [six] months."
- "Trusted to count and bag takings for the safe on closing shifts."
- "Trained [two] new starters on the cash-up process."
Only use figures you know are true. If you don't have exact numbers, describe the responsibility instead, such as being trusted with the kiosk or the cash office.
Age-restricted sales
Many supermarkets and convenience stores follow an age-check policy, often Challenge 25, for alcohol, tobacco, knives, lottery and other restricted products. Employers want to know you'll ask for ID every time and can refuse a sale politely. A line such as "Followed Challenge 25 on every restricted sale and refused sales calmly when needed" covers it. If you're under 18, check GOV.UK's child employment guidance (or nidirect in Northern Ireland) and ask the store how it handles restricted sales.

FAQs
What should I put on a cashier CV?
A short profile with your availability, then the payment types and tills you've used, how you keep your till accurate, age checks, refunds and how you deal with busy queues. Add education and any in-store training.
Is a cashier the same as a checkout operator or retail assistant?
Cashier and checkout operator usually mean the same job. A retail assistant does tills plus stock and shop-floor work. Use the exact title from the advert, and lead with the duties it mentions most.
How do I write a cashier CV with no experience?
Lead with your availability and a short profile, then give evidence that you're reliable, good with numbers and friendly: handling money at a school or charity event, volunteering, a sports club role, or maths at GCSE.
Can I be a cashier if I'm under 18?
Many supermarkets employ under-18s, but there are limits on the hours you can work and rules on selling age-restricted products such as alcohol. Check GOV.UK's child employment guidance (nidirect in Northern Ireland) and ask the store how it handles restricted sales.
Applying in the US, Canada or Australia? Is a cashier resume different?
Call it a cashier resume. The content is the same: payment types, cash handling, accuracy, customer service and availability. Use local spelling and the paper size employers there expect (US Letter in the US and Canada, A4 in Australia), keep it to one page for an entry-level role, and leave off a photo unless asked.
